 "What a dream!!!" 2009-10-04
By Wirerunnernyc (Bronx, NY USA)
Bought this TV plus Sony BDV-T11 (Blu-ray Home Theater). Now, I can put a DVD in, and it turns on TV and starts playing onscreen! No menu surfing. Very nice! Easy out-of-the-box setup. As other reviewers mentioned...Turn off light sensor!!! Sony should disable this feature. It really does make the picture quality look really bad. Thanks to previous reviewers for mentioning this. You save me hours of grief.

My main concern was reliability. I heard about most reliable being the three "S":

-Sony

-Samsung

-Sharp

I saw too many posts mentioning Sharp power supply failures. Same for some Panasonic plasmas from last 2-3 years. Also heard some complaints about some of the Samsung models. Much less with this Sony model. So, I decided to buy it. I hope this post helps. God bless you and good luck!

 "Great TV" 2009-09-03
By Richard Thomas Stone (Fresno, Ca)
This TV has plenty of inputs and outputs to hookup all of my components. The picture is excellent and the remote is easy to use and program for other components. I also purchased the internet video link box which is a nice addition. I would recommend this TV to anyone looking for a great picture and easy to setup.

"Finally found what I wanted!" 2009-08-05
      By Mickey H. Leatherman (Oklahoma)
I did a LOT of searching for a big screen HDTV, especially after having been literally robbed by SONY. I bought a SONY 50" projection TV and it lasted one year before needing service. The insides of it were replaced and that lasted another year, so I started looking for another set.

When I saw the 55" VIZIO at Walmart I couldn't believe the picture quality, the inputs and the price. I came back home and researched VIZIO, found out they were an American company, so I went back and bought it. And I am NOT disappointed! So far, it's been the best set I have ever had. I recommend it highly.

"Nobody Does It Better! Puts all other LCD Mfgs to shame!" 2009-06-18
      By Bruce R. Nelson
i am a confirmed Vizio Customer. I worked my way up the the SV470XVT 120hz/1080P from Costco last Fall. and I added the optional wireless subwoofer/rear satellite speakers. Total cost under $1500! I added a Sony PS3 primarily for the outstanding BluRay dvd player and I get 1080P gaming to boot. Now I am at just under $1900 for a whitehot machine which, by the serves as my primary monitor for my MacBookPro OSX 10.5. So, lets see, oh yes, I decided I wanted the very best electrical protection for the money on AMAZON I settled on the APC5750XL "Smart-UPS" which "launders my juice to a pure sine wave feed and gives me however much back up I need. Cost last winter at Amazon, $240! so now what do I need...you got it! I need a 55 inch Vizio so bad I can taste it. Everything I now have plus 6 more inches diagonal. I find the sound output which comes on automatic at 5.1 is all most neighbors will allow me to listen to...darn it all..can't have everything. I am now waiting for about 30 more days to see who has the best delivered pricing...COSTCO or AMAZON. I love Amazon but a few hundred means a lot to me, like another plug in back up battery for my APC750XL!

In my humble opinion, and if you are getting by on very limited income as am I...you really have no choice but VIZIO. They back their product and while the parts may come from God knows where, Vizio IS an American company! Something else to think about during these troubled times. GO VIZIO...and Amazon, make the 55" available delivered for under $1600. I am waiting to place my Prime order!

"On a budget or not, this is a great TV" 2009-06-10
By William Daniels III (Mt. Morris, MI United States)
Background: I graduated from college in spring of 2000, and that fall, bought MY first TV: a 32" Sharp. I thought it was great, until all the HDTV's started coming out. My next TV was a Panasonic 51" Rear Projection HDTV. It was great, but it really started to fade over the last year or so. Then, a capacitor exploded inside of it, so it was time for a new one.

When I was shopping for a TV, I had the following criteria:

      1. 1080P. I realize that almost nothing uses this high of resolution, but I'm planning on getting more Blu-Ray discs now.

      2. 120 hz refresh rate. I used to think that as long as it was a HDTV, that's all that mattered, but if you watch sports or anything fast moving, you want this higher refresh rate.

      3. At least 51". I was looking to upgrade, not downsize.

      4. Price. I wanted to spend $2000 tops.

After doing a lot of comparison shopping, I decided on this TV. It fits all of my criteria, and I'm thrilled with it.

Pros: It is a truly beautiful picture. The colors are crisp, bright, and accurate. The 120 hz refresh rate leaves no blur at all. I've been watching the Stanley Cup Finals (Go Wings!), and it's truly been a treat. I can't wait for the Superbowl. When we saw this next to all of the others, it looked as good as televisions that cost twice as much. It also has a ton of inputs. It has 5 HDMI ports, plus many others. I was finally able to get rid of my HDMI switch box. The sound seems to be pretty good, but I admit I haven't used it much. I have my own receiver that all my sound goes through.

Cons: The cons are minor. First, I'm still a little weary on the brand. Vizio is a newer, budget brand. You'll find lots of good reviews on Vizio online, but I'm still a little curious on how it will last. Also, I don't like how the sound bar is integrated. The sound bar is connected to the main TV by a clear plastic section. The hookups are on the left half of the TV (as you're facing the front), so the cables hang down and are visible through the plastic. Vizio did not create a clip or other sort of gathering area for the cables on the main trunk, to try and hide them, so they are visible. I'm going to rig something up with zip ties to try and keep them hidden.

And that is realy all the bad things I have to say. They would definitely not keep me from buying the TV again. It was a great deal at Sam's Club ($1549), and I feel I've more than gotten my money's worth.

"Just sit back and smile" 2009-04-22
By Melvin Johnson (Arlington, TX United States)
This set meets all the needs of any average american family. For those who minds run towards technical stats as if they were launching a rocket, well, they are never satisfied so this may not appeal to them, but they too would admit to features that exceed expectations and a price that does embarass big badge manufactures with 5 or more product lines. Buy it and feel the satisfaction spend the extra bucks for a otstanding sound system that Vizio sells too.

       "great price, beautiful picture" 2009-03-05
By S. Schonberger (near Seattle, WA, USA)
For years, I've made do with the same early-1990s-vintage 26-inch tube television set, waiting for the day to arrive when a big television with a great picture would turn up on the market at a decent price. When buying gadgets, it's really easy to put off a purchase by saying, "It will be better and cost less next year." Finally I found a screen that made me say, "It will be better and cost less next year, but only a little better and a little less." It was time to buy.

The specifications for "high definition" top out at 1080p, unless one moves into the theatrical digital market. It looks like cable television signals, broadcast signals, movie discs, and other media all top out at or below 1080p right now, and that no higher-resolution media are planned for the near future. Thus a 1080p screen is as good as it needs to be for the near future.

Television shows are broadcast at 30 frames per second (technically, 29.97), typically interlaced at 60 fields per second. Films are 24 frames per second. For smooth results with television media, a screen needs to run at a multiple of 60 per second. For smooth results from film, a screen needs to run at a multiple of 24 per second. A screen that runs at 120 per second (120 Hz) can show television material smoothly by repeating each field twice, and can show film smoothly by repeating each frame five times. Thus a 120 Hz screen is sufficient for optimal results with media from both television and film.

As for size, bigger is better, until the screen is too large for comfortable viewing, which depends on room size and personal preference.

Another consideration is inputs. This screen has five HDMI inputs, an RGB analog computer input with analog audio, an S-video input, a DTV/TV input, two component video and audio inputs, and an audio output. One of the HDMI and one of the component inputs is on the left edge (as viewed from the front) of the screen, rather than on the back. That's a lot of inputs; it covers just about any needs I can imagine.

This screen has numerous user-adjustable settings. In most cases, the defaults appear appropriate.

The "picture adjustment" settings include presets for various types of source material; "standard" and "movie" seem like the most useful ones to me. I adjusted the color temperature setting.

The H/V position and size settings are useful. Some television channels have a few pixel rows of jittery garbage; it's nice to adjust the vertical position to hide them because they're very distracting. Some channels have a few pixel columns of green on one side or the other; hiding them makes the screen look nicer.

An important adjustment feature is "viewing mode". This screen has five settings: "normal" (4:3 pictures displayed with black bars on the sides), "wide" (4:3 pictures stretched to the full width of the screen), "zoom" (widescreen pictures scaled proportionally to the full width of the screen, even if that cuts stripes off the top or bottom), "stretch" (widescreen pictures with black bars on the sides are stretched to the full width of the screen), and "panoramic" (the edges of 4:3 images are stretched, but the is preserved un-stretched).

Since this is my first high-definition screen (other than computer screens), I'm not an ideal judge of image quality in comparison to other sets. To my untrained eye, it looks great, and in the store it looked about as good as other sets of the same size.

The sound quality seems good for built-in speakers, but a fancy screen like this deserves a dedicated sound system.

Since this screen appears to have all the features it needs for the next few years, good quality, and a very low price, it's a good choice -- at least until something even better comes along.

Packed with features like a high definition integrated television display, ATSC Integrated Tuner and a 16: 9 aspect ratio, the KDF-55XS955 produces outstanding picture quality. Enjoy the incredible detail and clarity enabled by this television's 3.28 million dots resolution. The KDF-55XS955 also has the features you've come to expect from Sony, such as Cinemotion Reverse 3-2 Pulldown Technology, S-Master 1-Bit Digital Amplifier Flexible Twin-View 2-Tuner Picture-and-Picture. You can even listen to MP3 audio and view your photos with the built-in Enhanced Memory Stick Media slot.

      Amazon.com Product Description

Go for gold with Sony's stellar, 55-inch KDF-55XS955 rear-projection LCD television. The big-screen, flat-panel set delivers standard and full-fledged HDTV reception right out of the box through its integrated NTSC and ATSC (HDTV) tuners. It also offers digital cable readiness with a CableCARD slot and the latest digital-video interface, HDMI. Weighing a mere 105 pounds and standing just 19 inches deep, the set also offers maximum image with minimal space investment.

The set's 1,366 x 788 liquid-crystal display frees you from having to make convergence adjustments or having to worry about image burn-in. Instead you get incredible detail (more than 3 million pixels), high contrast, and even, corner-to-corner brightness from the set's user-replaceable 132-watt UHP (ultra high pressure) lamp.

The screen features a wide, 16:9 aspect ratio to match the dimension of most movies and HDTV broadcasts, and the KDF-55XS955 offers compatibility with standard-definition 480i, enhanced-definition 480p, and high-definition 720p and 1080i signals.

Sony's CineMotion 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal is a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

The set's WEGA Engine system maximizes picture performance from any video source by minimizing the number of digital-to-analog conversion processes. This full digital processing engine includes Sony's MID-X (Multi Image Driver), which maintains the integrity of a converted signal by minimizing image loss in the scaling process; and a proprietary optical engine, which employs a trio of Sony's wide-XGA, high-resolution LCD panels, 1 for each of the RGB signals (resulting in a total of 3.28 million dots of resolution).

The optical engine also features a special 11-element lens system responsible for the lightweight, ultra-slim cabinet. The lens system bends the light path, creating an ultra-short focal point while maintaining high brightness. This proprietary system delivers vivid images from the of the screen all the way to the edges.

This XS Series Grand WEGA television offers advanced menu functions that are typically found only in service menus: gamma correction (bright and dark balancing), black correction (enhances contrast), white balance (fine-tunes white intensity), detail enhancement (sharpens the picture), and clear white (emphasizes whites).

The set includes numerous other features.

      • TwinView PIP (picture-in-picture) lets you view any 2 sources simultaneously, even at different image resolutions, while the built-in Memory Stick media slot offers ready display of both JPEG images and MPEG-1 video.
      • A Memory Stick media slot (compatible with Memory Stick Pro and Memory Stick Duo media) grants convenient viewing of JPEG and MPEG-1 files. It can also display customized slide shows using MP3 files for background music.
      • Authorized CableCARD ability means the set will receive digital cable television systems services directly from the cable operator without requiring a bulky, external cable box.
      • Live Color is an innovative circuit that emphasizes blues and greens without affecting reds for a more natural, vivid picture. Choose from 3 enhancement levels (high, medium, low) or "off."
      • Sony's exclusive S-Master 1-bit digital amplifier produces 5 watts per channel (x 2), pumping an additional 20 watts into a built-in subwoofer for rich, full-bodied sound from movies and music.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link the set with any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver).

      What's in the Box
TV, remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, and warranty/registration information.

       "Very good HDTV" 2006-02-28
      By David Schneider (New Jersey)
I've had this TV for about 2 months now. I've connected an HDTV cable box via HDMI, progressive DVD player via component input and TIVO through S-video. So far the TV has performed extremely well, no problems to report. I've also been very impressed with the sound this TV produces. It's so good that I don't normally bother to run normal TV through my AV receiver.

Standard definition looks better than I expected for both straight cable broadcasts and through the TIVO recorded on medium quality. DVD look very good, but the true HDTV sources really shine with this TV - the Olympics were amazing!

The display is bright enough that I actually watch it with the bulb in "reduced" mode (even in the day) to extend the bulb life.

I've had no problems, and as suggested for anything projection systems I've got the TV hooked up to a UPS in case of power failure, and I did spring for an extended warrantee with bulb replacement.

       "Display Problem" 2004-12-02
      By Mark Seiwert (Wichita, Ks)
My Sony LCD large screen TV is just over one year old. It has yellow splotch about mid upper screen. A close inspection of the screen reveals a circuit board trace like pattern that is yellow. The set has not been abused or exposed to temperature extremes. A UPS should be used with these units to keep the lamp cooling fan powered in case of a power failure. The lamps are at least $250.00 I would definitely recomend the extended warranty. Is the technology not proven on these large screens? Is the screen going to fail after 3 years when the extended warranty is expired? Sony will not stand behind their product after the warrany is expired. (mine is two weeks out) Other than the display problem the unit has performed flawless. It's a lot of money for a TV that doesn't last more than a year!!!!

Weighing in heavy on style, features, and quality, Sony's cutting-edge, 55-inch KDF-55WF655 is nevertheless a lightweight when it comes to heft. That means the 101-pound LCD projection television is easy to position, and its relatively modest chassis--standing under 20 inches deep--won't push you out of your house. The set is also loaded with great features, from integrated NTSC and ATSC (HDTV) tuners to Sony's WEGA Engine system, digital cable readiness, and the latest digital-video interface, HDMI.

The screen features a wide, 16:9 aspect ratio to match the dimension of most movies and HDTV broadcasts, and the KDF-55WF655 offers compatibility with standard-definition 480i, enhanced-definition 480p, and high-definition 720p and 1080i signals. Sony's Digital Reality Creation (DRC) circuitry ensures high picture resolution, while proprietary Direct Digital Circuitry increases a video signal's signal-to-noise ratio before it reaches the DRC circuit, ensuring rich, natural-looking images from any source.

      • Channel Fix lets you select a specific TV channel (3, for example) for cable box reception. Then you can control a compatible cable box via the TV remote without inadvertently changing the TV from Channel 3.
      • Authorized CableCARD ability means the set will receive digital cable television systems services directly from the cable operator without requiring a bulky, external cable box.
      • Sony's exclusive S-Master 1-bit digital amplifier produces 15 watts per channel (x 2), ensuring high power for superb, clear dialog.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link the set with any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

"CAVEAT EMPTOR : Know what you're getting yourself into." 2009-10-28
By Michael Thomas (San Pedro, CA US)
First let me say that the sound quality and the picture quality are above average for televisions made at this time. But it would be irresponsible for someone to sell you this television with telling you about the known issues associated with this model. First and foremost, the optical block will not last very long. This is the main image creating device for this model. To replace and/or fix the model will cost upwards of a thousand dollars. Also, the bulbs only last a few years if you're lucky, and those run around 150-250 a piece, depending on whether you buy factor or after-market parts, and if there is service involved.

Do a google search about the 'optical block' and 'Sony Grand WEGA' or 'kdf-55wf655' for yourself before buying this one. It's a shame because when it does work, it really has a beautiful picture.

       "Not bad, not great" 2008-03-16
      By Kevin M. Moser
Great TV except in high light areas. Works best in a dark place. Also, it doesn't do well with fast motion HD such as sports. There is a lot of pixelation. But while watching HD in low light areas, it's terrific. I'm replacing the lamp now though after only 3.5 years. I guess this is a normal time with normal use. But dropping $200 on a new lamp is annoying. I can't wait until the lamp goes again. Then I can justify upgrading to a Plasma or LCD.

I would reccomend this TV to a friend if the price is right.

       "BEWARE!!!" 2006-08-03
      By rayplayguitar (Texas)
I've had this tv for about 15 months. Up until about a week ago this tv was total greatness. BUT now I am beside myself I am so livid and doubt I'll get another Sony anything!! It's become almost impossible to watch because the tv loses picture and sound for about 30 seconds and then it comes back. The standby light blinks about 38-42 times while this is going on. Sony "customer support" was no help and it's likely to fix it is going to cost an exhorbitant amount of money. This is the second Sony tv I've had crap out on me like this.

       "Great Product!" 2005-08-30
      By J. Bergen (Denver, CO)
I was sceptical about ordering such a high priced item off of the internet but after receiving the item I had no regrets. The Sony TV is great, the picture is amazing and set-up was a snap. The TV is a real value!

"TV is Great...shipping was hassle free except the wait" 2005-08-23
      By B. Baldwin
Since the TV is now obsolete by the next year model, I wanted to comment on the shipping. After reading a few of the horror stories and awaiting order confirmation, I did start getting nervous. The delay in the order shipping was due to lack of inventory, since it was near the end of the model line. This wait resulted in a $500 savings when compared to Best Buy and Circuit City. Once shipped, the TV was delivered promptly to my house by very courteous guys. They helped open the box and look things over in a preliminary inspection to insure things worked. Although things were a little stressful in the middle of the process, I am happy in the end.

Hitachi P55T551 55" HD1080 Plasma HDTV, shown above with optional stand. Stand is not included with television.

      Amazon.com Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description The Hitachi P55T551 is a 55-inch plasma HDTV that brings extraordinary value with a unique HD1080 resolution standard.

      Outstanding Picture Quality
With a unique 1280 x 1080 resolution, the P55T551 has over 1,000 lines of vertical resolution, allowing it to have a line-for-line match of incoming 1080i TV signals. While it is not the full 1080p resolution, it has a better resolution than 720p panels at a similar price. Picture quality is further enhanced, thanks to ClearWindow technology that reduces the visibility of a grid structure and maximizes brightness and clarity.

ClearWindow technology reduces the visibility of a pixel grid structure for a better picture. View larger. View back panel.

Timed swtiching allows picture settings to automatically adjust for changing ambient light conditions.
With the PictureMaster HD IV processor, all video inputs are scaled up to match the native resolution of the unit to ensure a detailed picture no matter the source. For a better picture, the processor also performs noise reduction and other picture enhancements, such as dynamic contrast and histogram processing, automatic 3:2 film enhancement, and the capability for 16-bit color. Users can select between four HD and six SD aspect modes, and three color temperature settings. The television can also be put in a split-screen mode so that two programs can be viewed simultaneously.

      Well Connected
The P55T551 has three HDMI SimplayHD inputs (two rear, one front), the highest quality connection available that has both high definition video and audio in one cable. It also has two component video inputs, one S-Video input, four A/V inputs, one RF/Antenna input, and an SD card input that allows you to view your photos on the screen. Outputs include one AV monitor output (fixed audio), one S-Video monitor output, and one optical digital audio output. You can connect the optical digital audio output with your home theater system to obtain surround sound when the built-in 20-watt speaker system isn't quite enough. The TV speaker can then be used as a speaker.

The HDTV has built-in ATSC/NTSC tuners, both of which are combined into one tuning memory for seamless selection of channels, regardless of format. The unit is also QAM-digital-cable compatible.

      Day and Night Differences
The P55T551 allows for three custom settings that match the picture settings with accompanying ambient light conditions so that you get the optimal picture and contrast settings no matter the hour. Additionally, the anti-reflective screen ensures a quality picture by reducing glare and deepening blacks for more contrast. The television also features multiple screen saver and power saving modes for efficiency when not in use.

The P55T551 is backed by a 1-year parts and labor warranty.

      HD1080

      - Higher overall panel resolution than 720p televisions. 1080 lines of resolution, a line for line vertical match for incoming 1080i TV signal. 1280 x 1080 total panel resolution (1.3 Mega Pixel).

      PictureMaster HD IV

Proprietary digital video processor optimizes picture performance of all incoming source material.

Hitachi Ultravision 55HDS69 55" Plasma HDTV

      Amazon.com Product Description

Get the most out of your high-definition plasma television purchase with the 55-inch Hitachi 55HDS69, which offers a wealth of advanced technological features that will ensure superior picture and audio performance for years to come. Its blend of refined aesthetics is ideal for any home while its fully high-definition display--with 768 vertical lines of progressive resolution--provides stunningly vivid and colorful entertainment. The set's built-in ATSC (DTV) tuner pulls HD signals (480p/720p/1080i) right from the airwaves, and its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. The set's CableCARD port means the set will also receive digital cable television systems services directly from a compatible cable operator without requiring a bulky, external cable box. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming.

Plasma display technology offers the widest viewing angle of any type of television. The wide viewing angle makes plasma the ultimate choice for wall mounted television. Plasma television performance is also exceptional for producing high quality images of fast motion content, like sports programming.

This set's video is powered by the PictureMaster HD III processing technology, which features third-generation 1080p processing and new histogram processing for enhanced contrast, sharpness, and color for a clearer, sharper picture. It also offers extended color capabilities to reproduce the purest reds, greens and blues, a maximum 16-bit/281 trillion color capability, and a 16 percent brighter panel.

The 4 MB, 10-bit digital 3D Y/C comb filter separates brightness and color signals better in 3D domain to eliminate cross-color, cross-luminance and dot-crawl distortion. It performs field-by-field comparisons of the television image to accurately separate the color from the black-and-white information and remove both horizontally and vertically hanging dots, as well as dot crawl, resulting in a razor sharp image. This set also performs automatic 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.

The 55HDS69 has a 1365 x 768-pixel resolution, and a high-contrast black rib structure that provides excellent contrast and deep blacks with any source material or viewing environment. It's designed to make a big impact with images that will literally jump off the screen. Other video features include three color temperature settings, four-step black enhancement, multiple aspect ratio formats (four HD, six SD), and split-screen/picture-in-picture functionality. The anti-reflective, high-contrast screen effectively absorbs ambient room light, reducing reflections and producing richer blacks, vibrant color and increased detail in shadows and highlights. Convenience features include on/sleep timers, closed caption decoder, V-Chip parental controls, several screensavers, and three-language on-screen display (English, French, Spanish).

It has a three-way, 36-watt speaker system that can produce simulated surround sound and a bass boost. The set can also be used as a -channel speaker in a full surround sound system. It includes the following video and audio connections:

      • Composite A/V: 4 rear, 1 side
      • S-Video: 2 rear
      • Component Video: 2 rear, 1 side
      • HDMI: 2 rear, 1 side
      • RF: 1
      • Digital audio output: 1 optical

       "55" Hitachi Plasma TV Issue: 55HDS69" 2009-09-09
      By Todd R. Calevro
I turned on my 55HDS69 a week ago and WAAH-BOOM, No more picture but the sound was fine. The resolution underway at a local repair shop is to replace the upper & lower buffers. The TV is 2 yrs and nine months old. I did not buy the extended warranty as I expected a $3000+ TV to last longer than 3 years especially since my house is like a climate controlled class 40 clean room and the TV is not over used. The parts are ~$225, The labor is ~$225. Hitachi would have sent the parts for free had I been within the 2-year window (1 yr regular warranty + 1 yr grace period). It was absolutely silly of me to think HITACHI would do the right thing and send me parts at 2 yrs and 9 months (sarcasm). I can tell you one thing......There is NFW I will ever buy a Hitachi product again and that includes anything even affiliated with Hitachi (inc. imbeded electronics). I will steer every person on the planet away from them in the future. My original plan was to ship the TV to the Hitachi CEO to make a point but the Hitachi folks don't deserve that kind of respect (Unless it blows out again) :(

"Great Price- Even Greater TV" 2007-10-02
      By John S. Moore
After reading a recommendation from Consumer Reports, I shopped this unit around and purchased it off the internet for $2,000 (freight incl.) and am very happy with the quality of the picture- although as with most high-tech electronics; my lack of understanding of all of the ways to connect to your cable box, DVD recorder, surround-sound, etc. made set-up a very confusing and time-consuming ordeal. If you are not an audio-video technophile, you may want to consider hiring a professional to come in and do it right.

       "Don't buy Hitachi!" 2007-06-28
By Mr. Hung-yen Cheng (Agoura Hills, CA)
My Hitachi HDTV is still broken after 4 repair attempts. Phone support flat out lies to me telling me they don't offer refund or exchange. After escalating it to her supervisor, got him to admit that exchange is an option. Now waiting for them to call me back with their decision. Not holding my breath.

"You must buy this HDTV...NOW!!!!" 2007-06-26
By Kevin M. Ohara (Troy, MI USA)
All I have to say is wow! Like some of the others have said, I too did a TON of research on this TV along with every other TV in its's class. Hitachi is a fantastic manufacturer and this is an incredible TV. Amazon's price of $1,999.99 is completely fair for a machine of this quality and their price is consistent with other retailers fortunate enough to have a couple of these TV's.

I watched my first Blu-Ray movie on this TV last night and I was blown away. Watching sports in High-Def is truly amazing. I just cant say enough.

Also, if you happen to own a PS3, this TV really brings out the quality picture in your games.

WORD OF ADVICE: Don't wait on this too much longer. These TV's are in limited supply and, as you can imagine, are selling out quickly. Also, be prepared to spend around $200 for either a stand or a wall mount kit.

       "Bigger is better" 2007-06-14
By Ztimster (Madison, WI United States)
I did over 6 months of research and found this set to be the best bang for the buck. I was able to get it for $1729 at Tiger Direct and was lucky enough to be just out of state so no tax and I picked it up so no shipping. I put it on the wall with a Peerless Tilt mount rated to 200lbs and it was the easiest install I had ever done. The only word of caution: This is a huge set and it takes 2 big guys to lift and install.

Now I am into professional video and work closely with video reproduction on computer monitor and other screens so my eye is more critical than most and I have one thing to say. There are purchases that don't live up to your expectations, products that come out about what you expected and the few that far exceed your expectations. My experience was the latter. For the cost, this set blew me away. You can't get a better looking image from a set this size for this cost. I paired it with a Toshiba HD-2A HD DVD player and though the Toshiba is a little clunky, it has awesome image upconversion and features (an obvious early adopter box). The SD DVDs I have played on it look awesome. I will let you know how the HD DVDs look once I pick a few up. I plugged my XBOX 360 in and WOW, there is nothing like it (there were audible gasps from my friends)...even from 3 feet away!

This set is being phased out by Hitachi and replaced by a smaller 50" 1080i 401 series set now which I hear is also very good, but I was quite happy to save a grand and have 5 more inches on my wall.
